Five years ago, my private school journey came to an end.

When I look back, one thing stands out:

I was one of two black girls in my academic year and in most classrooms, the only one. It is clearly an understatement to say that I felt completely different and isolated most of the time. The pressure to fit in was one of the main forces controlling my mind.

Having said that, those four years shaped me into the young woman that I am today. I honed resilience, the power of identity and how to find my voice even when it was deemed insignificant.

If you are a black girl navigating the struggles of private school right now, this post is for you.

Below are 10 LESSONS that I wish someone had told me five years ago... so I present to you, the survival guide I had to create for myself.

  1. FIND YOUR VOICE EARLY

In the moment, blending in the background can feel safe but it's just an illusion. Speak up in class, share your perspective and do not shrink yourself to make others comfortable. Your voice has power - use it.

  2. CREATE YOUR OWN SAFE SPACES

Not everywhere you go has a welcome mat waiting for you. Be brave and create your own. Whether it's through a trusted friend, a mentor, or even journaling to yourself. Your safe space is what will keep you going.

  3. DON'T LET THE BLAZER DEFINE YOU

School uniform is a façade - You may all look the same but always remember your worth. It is not tied to how well you blend in. Therefore, stand out and be yourself.

  4. SELF-CARE IS NOT OPTIONAL

Yes, you read that right! Protecting your peace is not "soft life" living nor is it a luxury - it's survival. Don't allow the overwhelming pressure of school swallow you whole.

  5. REPRESENTATION MATTERS, DON'T BE AFRAID IF IT STARTS WITH YOU

Being "the only one" is tough, yes. But you wouldn't be in a situation where you weren't supposed to be. You may not realise it now, but you are the representation that you need. Walk with that pride. Trust me, you are paving the way for other young black girls who will come after you.

  6. LEARN TO LAUGH AT IGNORANCE

    Always protect your energy:

Laugh, Educate when you need to and most importantly, Move On.

  7. CELEBRATE YOUR CULTURE BOLDLY

WEAR your hair how you want, SHARE your traditions, EAT your motherland cuisine, LISTEN to your music. Your culture is your crown, so never hide it away.

  8. MASTER YOUR OWN ART OF EXCELLENCE

Excellence doesn't mean perfection. It means showing up prepared, pushing yourself where it matters and defining success by your standards - not anyone else's. Own your ambition, and don't let stereotypes box in your potential.

  9. LEAN ON FAMILY (BLOOD OR CHOSEN)

Surround yourself with people who uplift you, understand you, know who you are and never stop reminding you of what you're capable of.

  10. OWN YOUR STORY

Your private school experience is just a chapter, not your whole story.

    Always remember that.

These are just some lessons that shaped me in 'the private school blazers'.

I hope they help you like they did me.

If you are a black girl walking in those hallways now, just remember...

You are more than enough and you surely belong in every classroom you walk into.
